Even a 'crowded' Wiggins Pass is light by ocean-coast standards. Most of the year the only people in the water are swimmers, shellers and paddlers.
With surf this rare, the Gulf scene is small, friendly and stoked-to-share rather than territorial — when it's actually on, everyone's just happy the ocean showed up. Standard beach-break etiquette covers it: don't drop in, rotate peaks, give longboarders and learners room, and don't be the visitor who paddles straight to the inside on the one good bank. In the lineup: The sandbars near the pass and inlet hold the best banks; sit where the cleaner peaks are reforming after the front, and expect the wave to be short, soft and quick to close out. Water safety
Delnor-Wiggins is an unlifeguarded state-park beach (swim at your own risk — heed the posted warning flags) with a generally gentle, sandy-bottom, shallow Gulf — no reef or urchins. The real hazards are the tidal current through Wiggins Pass itself (strong on the inlet; people get pulled toward the cut, so don't swim or paddle into the channel) and occasional rip currents along the bars after a front, which is exactly when surf shows up. There are no lifeguards on this beach, so know your limits and don't surf alone. Gulf water quality is usually good but can suffer during red-tide blooms (a Karenia brevis algae event that irritates eyes/throat and can close beaches) and after heavy rain runoff — check Florida red-tide and beach-advisory reports before a session. Water is bath-warm in summer and pleasant in winter; a rash vest or spring suit is plenty on the cold-front days.
