The trade-off is no secret. Swamis may be the most crowded point in San Diego County — a Surfing Reserve-caliber wave with a strict, decades-deep pecking order. Longboarders and high-level locals hold down the outside peak, shortboarders jockey for the inside bowl, and on a good winter day there can be 60+ people spread down the point before breakfast. Visitors get waves here by being patient, competent and visibly respectful, not by paddling straight to the top of the point.
As a travel base, Encinitas is one of the easiest surf trips in the world: 27 road miles from San Diego International, year-round surfable water (in rubber), and a walkable Coast Highway 101 strip of cafes, surf shops and breweries. If the points are flat or maxed, beach breaks from Cardiff Reef to Beacon's and D Street are minutes away. Just don't expect to score Swamis firing without sharing it.

Dense, skilled and mixed: career longboarders on the outside, shortboarders on the inside bowl, and everyone in between — 40–80 people down the point isn't unusual on a good winter swell, and even average days draw a crowd. Weekday dawn patrol or the last hour of light thins it slightly; a midweek rainy-day window after the swell peaks is your best shot at relative space.
Swamis isn't known for aggro enforcement or vandalism — it's known for a strict, competence-based pecking order that simply doesn't pass waves to unknown faces. The outside peak is held down by a deep bench of longtime locals (many on longboards) with decades of priority; visitors who paddle straight to the top and start hassling get iced out, not yelled at. The play everyone recommends: sit wide or inside, wait genuinely, take the scraps cleanly, don't paddle around people for position, and never drop in — wave-sharing happens here only on a one-at-a-time, earn-it basis.
In the lineup: Paddle out via the 140-ish stairs from the bluff-top lot, then enter off the beach north of the main peak and use the channel; the kelp keeps it groomed but adds paddling drag. The outside peak ('the Point') breaks furthest up on big W/NW; the inside section runs faster and more makeable shoreward — many visitors get their wave count there. Watch for the cobblestone/reef bottom at lower tides, and on solid swells respect the current pushing down the point: losing your position means a long paddle back up the lineup.
Encinitas is the surf-town archetype that the rest of the world copies: a walkable Coast Highway 101 strip of surf shops, taco joints, breweries and yoga studios strung between the train tracks and the bluffs, with the gold lotus domes of the Self-Realization Fellowship anchoring the south end of town. It's affluent and polished these days — more $8 lattes than dirtbag surf shacks — but the surf culture is genuine and generations deep: boards on every bike rack, dawn-patrol lines at the taco shops, and a town calendar that still revolves around swell. Leucadia, just north, keeps a shaggier, funkier version of the same thing.
How do you get to Swamis?
Fly into San Diego International Airport (SAN) — about 27 miles from the break, 30–50 minutes depending on I-5 traffic. LAX is ~100 miles north with more international lift, but the 2–3+ hour drive through LA and Orange County traffic makes it worth it only for a big fare difference. John Wayne (SNA) is ~60 miles north and a calmer mid-option.

Excellent by US standards: downtown Encinitas lodging puts the Swamis stairs, the 101 restaurant strip, Moonlight Beach and the SRF gardens all within a 10–25 minute walk, and there's a sidewalk/bike path the whole way down Highway 101. Leucadia and Cardiff lodging means a short drive or a flat 10–15 minute bike ride.
A rental car is the default ($40–80/day from SAN) and is what lets you chase Cardiff Reef, Beacon's, Grandview or a Black's mission when Swamis is crowded or off. But Encinitas is one of the few US surf towns where carless works: the COASTER train links downtown Encinitas to San Diego, e-bike and beach-cruiser rentals are everywhere on the 101, and Uber/Lyft cover evenings. Swamis' own bluff-top lot is free but tiny and fills before dawn on good swells — overflow parking goes along Highway 101, which is half the reason locals bike to the point.
Boards: Biking the 101 with a board (side rack or under-arm on a cruiser) is the authentic local move and solves the Swamis parking problem. Rideshares take shortboards readily, longboards reluctantly. Soft racks on a rental are the safest bet for a quiver.

Scripps Memorial Hospital Encinitas, with a 24/7 ER, is ~2 miles inland on Santa Fe Drive — minutes away. Urgent-care clinics and pharmacies (CVS, etc.) are on Encinitas Blvd and El Camino Real. US healthcare is expensive; travelers should carry insurance.
Water safety
The hazards are manageable but real: a rock-reef/cobblestone bottom that gets shallow inside at low tide, kelp, rip current along the point on overhead swells, and a long paddle back up the lineup when the sweep is running. Stingrays bury in the sandy patches inside — do the stingray shuffle walking out, especially late summer. Swami's has a seasonal lifeguard tower (staffed roughly late June–Labor Day, ~10am–6pm; year-round patrols citywide) and the city's Safe Beach Day app shows tower status, stingray reports and alerts in real time. Water quality is tested weekly and is generally good, but follow the standard San Diego rule: stay out of the ocean for 72 hours after significant rain, when urban runoff spikes bacteria levels. Water runs ~55–61°F in winter (4/3 wetsuit, booties optional) to ~66–72°F in early fall.
