It's still one of the most consistent swell magnets on the Space Coast. The inlet area picks up everything — summer–fall hurricane swells are the prize, and winter nor'easters supply the bread-and-butter season — with peaks scattered north of the jetty, a heavier shallow section right beside it, and Monster Hole, the outer sandbar-and-rock break a third of a mile off the south side that only wakes up on serious swell and demands a long paddle through famously sharky, tidal water.
The logistics are pure Florida state park: pay the vehicle fee, park in the lot, walk to the peak. There's no town at the inlet itself — base yourself in Melbourne Beach to the north, the fishing-village-turned-suburb of Sebastian across the lagoon, or upscale Vero Beach to the south, and treat the drive down A1A past the Archie Carr turtle-nesting beaches as part of the ritual.

Weekend mornings and any real swell draw a big, talented crowd — pros, ex-pros, groms and half of Brevard and Indian River counties. It thins midweek, in summer slop, and at the peaks farther north of the jetty. Monster Hole's paddle keeps its crowd self-selecting.
Sebastian's lineup has been famously competitive since the First Peak glory days — the inlet crew is known for high standards, hustle for set waves, and little patience for snaking or paddling straight to the top of the peak. It's performance-Florida, not enforcer territory: wait your turn, don't burn anyone, and you'll get waves. On big hurricane-swell days the pecking order at the main peaks is real and earned.
In the lineup: The wedgier, hollower sand sits closest to the north jetty — also the shallowest and most crowded. Softer peaks run north up the beach. Respect the inlet itself: tidal current through the cut is powerful, and outgoing tide pulls hard toward the jetty and out to sea. Monster Hole is a ~20-minute paddle off the south side over deeper, murky water — go with company, on a bigger board, and watch the tide. Check it from the jetty or the bridge before committing anywhere.
There's no town at the wave — Sebastian Inlet is a state park bisected by a bridge, with parking lots, a campground, museums and fishermen. Inside the park everything is walkable — north-side parking lots sit right behind the jetty peaks, and the campground is a short walk or drive from the wave. But the park is an island of state land on a barrier-island highway: the nearest grocery store is ~9 miles north, the nearest restaurants 10–17 miles away. Without a car you're stuck.
Rent a car at the airport ($35–70/day). A1A is the only road — one lane each way along the South Beaches, with the inlet bridge (Jimmy Buffett Memorial Highway) crossing the park itself. Sebastian town is reached via the CR-510 Wabasso causeway then US-1 north (~25 min from the park); Vero Beach's oceanside strip is ~17 miles south; Melbourne Beach village ~14 miles north. Rideshare exists in the towns but not reliably at the park. Note: bridge construction at the inlet is underway (mobilized mid-2026, running multi-year through ~2031) — expect periodic off-peak lane closures and congestion on A1A, though two-way traffic across the inlet is maintained throughout.

Cash & ATMs
No ATM at the break — bring your park entry fee ($8/vehicle) by card or cash and sort money in town. Banks and ATMs cluster in Sebastian along US-1 and at the Publix plazas (Driftwood Plaza, 9 miles north, is the closest). Everything here takes cards; cash is mainly for tips and bait.
Medical
Urgent cares and a hospital sit across the lagoon in Sebastian (HCA Florida Sebastian Hospital on US-1, ~25 min). For major trauma it's Holmes Regional Medical Center in Melbourne (~45 min). Lifeguard coverage in the park is limited/seasonal at best — treat the surf zone as unguarded and self-reliant.
Water safety
Two real hazards. First, the inlet current: tidal flow through the cut is genuinely powerful, especially on the outgoing tide — stay off the bars nearest the channel mouth and never swim the inlet itself. The jetty rocks claim boards and skin on bigger days. Second, sharks: this is one of the most honestly sharky lineups in the US — blacktips and spinners year-round (peaking in the spring/fall mullet runs), plus bulls around the murky inlet water; Brevard County logs some of the highest bite counts in the world, almost all minor. Locals manage it by avoiding dawn/dusk during bait runs, skipping sessions when mullet schools are getting blown up, and accepting the odds. Water is warm March–November; mid-winter needs a 3/2.
