The catch is that everything here moves. The bars rebuild after every storm, the beach itself is eroding fast (the houses-falling-into-the-ocean footage you've seen on the news was shot in Rodanthe), and access changed for good in 2022 when the 2.4-mile Jug Handle bridge bypassed the S-curves entirely. The days of pulling onto the Highway 12 shoulder right at the peak are over: you now park at the Fish & Wildlife lot at the bridge's north end or at Rodanthe's beach accesses and walk the beach to whichever bar looks best. Treat it as a scouting game — the named spot matters less than finding today's sandbar.
Off the water, this is a remote barrier-island strip, not a surf town. Rodanthe, Waves and Salvo (the 'tri-villages') are a line of vacation rental houses, campgrounds, a couple of pizza joints and two of the world's biggest kiteboarding operations, with the nearest supermarket and bank 15–20 minutes south in Avon. Come with a car, a quiver and a flexible forecast window, and September–October Hatteras delivers some of the best beachbreak surf in America.

Quiet most days; crowded in bursts. A good forecast pulls surfers from Virginia Beach, the northern Outer Banks and beyond, and a named-storm swell brings pros and photographers. Summer weekends add vacationing beginners on village peaks. Dawn patrols, weekdays and the post-Labor Day window are dramatically quieter — and the walk-in access since the bridge opened has thinned the S-Turns pack compared to the roadside-parking era.
Hatteras lineups are known for a tight, talented local crew — many of the East Coast's best surfers live or grew up here — and the standard rules are enforced by skill more than aggression: don't paddle straight to the main peak, don't snake, and earn position. Visitors who spread out (there are miles of bars), wait their turn and keep a low profile on pumping days are generally absorbed without drama. Big hurricane swells concentrate the region's best on the best bank — that peak is not the place to learn.
In the lineup: There is no single takeoff spot — scout from the beach and pick the bar with the best shape that session. The wave likes low-to-mid tide and a SE swell with west in the wind. Watch for sweeping longshore current on bigger days (paddle out up-current of your bar) and a punchy inside shorebreak on the dry sand. North of Rodanthe, give any collapsed-house debris zones a wide berth — nails and lumber wash through the surf zone after collapses until cleanup finishes.
Rodanthe, Waves and Salvo blur together into a few miles of beach houses on stilts, campgrounds, kite shops and a handful of restaurants between the ocean and the Pamlico Sound — more remote outpost than town. Summer is family-vacation busy; by late fall it's surfers, kiters, anglers and locals, and half the kitchens close. The erosion story is part of the place: you'll see threatened oceanfront rows in north Rodanthe and hear NC-12 closure talk like weather. It's wild, exposed, occasionally inconvenient — exactly why the surf is so good.
How do you get to S-Turns (Cape Hatteras)?
Fly into Norfolk International Airport (ORF) — about 114 miles from the break, 2.5 hours (3+ on summer Saturdays). Raleigh-Durham (RDU) usually has more flights and cheaper fares but is roughly 250 miles / 4.5–5 hours away. Norfolk is the right call for almost everyone; consider RDU only if the fare gap is large. There is no commercial service on the Outer Banks themselves.

All major agencies operate at ORF. The route runs through Chesapeake and down US-158/NC-12 across the Marc Basnight and Jug Handle bridges. Within Rodanthe, Waves or Salvo you can walk or bike from most rental houses to a beach access, the pier and a pizza joint — the villages are a couple of miles of NC-12 frontage. But the S-Turns bars sit north of the village, the supermarket and ATM are in Avon (15–20 min), and spot-hopping the island's bars without a car is impossible.
Rent a car at Norfolk and keep it all week. NC-12 is the island's single road; everything is mileage along it. A 4WD with an ORV permit ($50 for 10 days from the National Park Service, recreation.gov) opens up beach driving on designated Seashore ramps further south — a genuine advantage for chasing sandbars around Cape Point and Frisco. Watch for sand and standing water on NC-12 after storms; the road still overwashes north and south of the bridge, and NCDOT closures are posted on DriveNC.gov.
Boards: Bring soft racks or rent an SUV — board-friendly vehicles are the norm here and nobody blinks at a stacked quiver. From the Jug Handle bridge north lot or the Rodanthe accesses you're walking the beach 5–25 minutes to the bars, so a light board bag or no bag at all is the move. REAL Watersports and the local surf shops rent decent boards if the airline maims yours.

No bank in the tri-villages. The nearest full-service bank and ATM is First National Bank in Avon (Hatteras Island Plaza, by the Food Lion, ~17 mi south), plus a 24/7 FNB ATM on NC-12 in Avon; some Rodanthe/Waves convenience stores have fee-charging machines. Cards are accepted essentially everywhere, so cash needs are light.

Outer Banks Health Family Medicine operates a clinic in Avon (appointment-based). The nearest hospital and 24/7 ER is The Outer Banks Hospital in Nags Head, ~35–40 miles / 45–60 minutes north — and NC-12 storm closures can cut that route, so don't sit on injuries with weather inbound. Pharmacies are also in Avon.
Water safety
Serious beachbreak: rip currents here are among the most dangerous on the US East Coast and kill swimmers every season — know how to spot and escape them, and on solid swells expect sweeping longshore current and a heavy inside shorebreak over shallow bars. There are NO lifeguards at S-Turns or the tri-village beaches (the Seashore staffs only a few beaches well to the north and south, summer only). Sharks are present and bites occasionally happen on the Outer Banks, though risk stays statistically tiny; avoid murky water near schooling bait at dawn/dusk. After house collapses in Rodanthe/Buxton, debris (lumber, nails, septic material) can litter the surf zone — heed NPS closure notices around collapse sites. Water quality is otherwise good ocean water; water temps run ~40s°F in winter (hooded 5/4, boots, gloves) to low 80s in August.
