Expect a crowd whenever it's good — shortboarders, longboarders, groms and a strong local contingent, heaviest on weekends and any clean swell. Weekday dawns thin out, and walking south from the jetty to a beachbreak peak is the standard move to escape the pack. Summer flat spells empty it out.
The inlet and the New Smyrna jetties are known as some of the busiest, most-localized peaks in Central Florida — the prime banks are tight, the pack is deep, and regulars are known for owning specific peaks. It's not aggressive by reputation, but it rewards humility: don't paddle straight to the keyhole peak, don't drop in, take your turn, and spread out down the beachbreak if the jetty is stacked.

If you book a condo in one of the oceanfront Ponce Inlet towers or a New Smyrna Beach rental on the sand, you can walk to a beachbreak peak — but the inlet jetties themselves are reached via Lighthouse Point Park at the very south tip, and the New Smyrna Inlet side is a drive across the water. Nothing about this trip works well on foot.
Plan on a rental car for the whole trip ($40-75/day). There's no transit between the surf, lodging, groceries in Port Orange/New Smyrna, and the two sides of the inlet. Uber and Lyft cover the area for one-offs (airport, dinner) but you can't reliably hail rides for early surf checks. No scooter or bike-rental culture geared to surfers, though some New Smyrna shops rent beach cruisers. Beach driving is allowed on parts of New Smyrna and Daytona for a county pass, but NOT inside Lighthouse Point Park.
Boards: Sedans dominate the rental fleets, so bring soft roof racks and tie-downs for anything over 7'0"; many surfers just throw boards inside an SUV. Lighthouse Point Park has a paid lot right by the jetty so you don't carry boards far.
