Point Dume is the big sandstone headland that closes off the west end of Malibu, and the surf wrapped around it tells two very different stories. On the public side, Westward Beach is a long, exposed stretch of sand that picks up west and northwest swell and breaks as a sandbar beach break — fun and accessible, with the dramatic cliff of the Point itself rising at its south end. Around the corner, tucked into a sheltered east-facing cove, sits Little Dume: a quality right-hand reef/point that on the right winter NW swell turns into one of the best, heaviest waves in Los Angeles County. When it's on, it's thick, hollow, and fast over rock — and it is also famously, ferociously local.

That localism is the thing every visitor needs to understand before they come. Little Dume sits below an exclusive gated neighborhood, and its only easy land access is through private, locked gates on streets like Birdview Avenue and Whitesands Place, controlled by the homeowners' deeded 'Riviera' beach easements (a beach key here is rumored to trade for over a million dollars). The lineup is widely regarded as one of the most localized in California. We're not going to dress that up: as a non-local you are not welcomed in the water at Little Dume, and paddling out cold is asking for a confrontation. The honest, friendly move is to surf the public alternatives — Westward Beach and the legally public sand at Big Dume — and treat Little Dume as a wave you watch from the headland.

The payoff for coming anyway is one of the prettiest corners of the California coast. The Point Dume Natural Preserve trail climbs the headland to overlooks where gray whales pass close in winter, Zuma Beach rolls out to the north, and the little Point Dume Village shopping center handles groceries, coffee, and a legendary breakfast burrito. Base yourself in Malibu, rent a car (you'll need one out here), and treat this as a scenic, low-key surf-and-hike trip rather than a chase for the cove's reef.

Local vibe & lineup etiquette

Little Dume is known throughout California as one of its most heavily localized waves — the lineup is closely guarded by surfers from the surrounding gated neighborhood, and visitors who paddle out cold should expect, at minimum, a frosty reception. Treat it as community perception, not a slight against any individual: the realistic, respectful play is not to surf Little Dume's reef as a non-local at all. Instead, surf the genuinely public peaks at Westward Beach and the legally public sand at Big Dume, keep a wide berth, never drop in, and let regulars have priority everywhere. Friendliness, patience and reading the room go a long way out here.

In the lineup: Surf the public options. Westward is a shifting sandbar beach break — watch a set cycle, pick the peaks, and mind rip currents that run along the sand. Big Dume / the rocks below the Point hold reef and urchins, so booties help and exits over rock should be timed between sets. The Little Dume reef is a fast right over rock with urchin-covered bottom and a heavy, localized lineup; as a visitor, watch it from the headland rather than paddling out. Cell signal is decent on the bluff but check tides and swell before committing to a rocky entry.

Point Dume is a wealthy, semi-rural Malibu neighborhood of large homes, horse properties and gated streets spread across a headland — quiet, residential and not built for tourists. Its center of gravity is the modest Point Dume Village shopping plaza, where a supermarket, a couple of cafés, a pizza place and Lily's famous burritos make up most of the 'town.' The feel is laid-back California-coastal money: stunning scenery, easy mornings, almost no nightlife, and an unmistakable sense that the best of the area — the cove, the beach keys — belongs to the people who live here. Lean into the hiking, the whales and the public beaches and it's a beautiful, mellow place; come expecting to crash the local reef and it won't go well.

Getting there

Fly into Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) — about 38 miles from the break, 55–90 minutes (can exceed 2 hours in bad PCH/405 traffic). Hollywood Burbank (BUR) is sometimes a cheaper domestic option and avoids the worst of the LAX exit, roughly a similar 60–90 minute drive via the 101/Kanan or Malibu Canyon. For most visitors LAX has the flights and the car-rental scale, so it's the default.

  A car is essentially mandatory out here. All major agencies are at the LAX consolidated rental facility reached by the free shuttle (or the new automated people mover). Take Sepulveda/PCH up the coast, or the 405 to the 10 to PCH — PCH itself is the scenic, traffic-prone home stretch through Malibu. Most rentals are sedans/SUVs with no racks; bring soft racks or fit a shortboard inside.

  Uber/Lyft pick up from LAX-it, the dedicated rideshare lot reached by shuttle from the terminals. Doable as a one-way to your lodging, but pricey for the distance and impractical as your only transport once in Point Dume — ride availability out here is thin.   Scheduled shared-van services serve the Malibu corridor but are infrequent and slow with multiple stops, and board bags are hit-or-miss. Only a fallback if you're not renting a car; confirm board policy when booking.

Getting around

Rent a car ($45–90/day at LAX); it is the only practical way to surf and live out here. Park at the paid Point Dume State Beach / Westward Beach lot (end of Westward Beach Road) — roughly $3 on weekdays, around $8 summer weekends and up to $14 winter weekends — or grab one of the very limited free spots along Westward Beach Road (reached via Cliffside Drive to Birdview Avenue), which fill at dawn on good days. There's also a small free 2-hour lot at the top of the Point for the preserve trail. Uber/Lyft exist but are slow to arrive and expensive this far out; don't rely on them. Public transit (Metro Line 134 along PCH) is infrequent and not board-friendly.

Boards: Plan to carry boards from your car: it's a flat walk from the Westward lot to the sand, and a short downhill scramble to Big Dume from the Point Dume preserve trail. Bring soft racks for your rental — most agencies supply bare cars. The Birdview/Whitesands gated access to Little Dume itself is for deeded residents only, so don't count on a short carry to the reef.
