Light. Even on a quality swell you'll see a modest crew rather than a packed lineup, and many days there's hardly anyone out because there's no surf. The real crowd here is the summer swimming crowd, which is exactly why surfing is banned 9am–5pm in season — surf the shoulders of the day or come September through May when the beach empties out.
Good Harbor is known as a friendly, low-key beach break with relatively few surfers even on good days, so the lineup is easygoing by Northeast standards. Standard beach-break etiquette applies — share the peaks, don't drop in, give learners room — and the local crew (organized enough to lobby the city for more surf access) is welcoming to visitors who are respectful and read the conditions. Sandbar peaks shift, so spread out rather than all stacking on one bank.
In the lineup: It's a beach break: paddle out at a channel or rip between sandbars and look for the better-shaped bank on the day (it moves with the sand). Best on a pushing high tide; lower tides can get fat or close out. Salt Island and the rocks at the beach's edges are hazards on bigger days — stay off them. Downtown Gloucester (Main Street, the harbor restaurants) is a 5-minute drive or a flat ~30-minute walk from the beach, and Surfari on Bass Ave is even closer (under a mile). East Gloucester is otherwise spread out and hilly.
A rental car ($45–90/day from Logan) is the practical choice — it lets you chase swell, beat the summer surf-ban window, and reach Rockport, Halibut Point and the rest of Cape Ann on flat days. Uber and Lyft operate but coverage thins on the Cape and pickups outside town can be slow; there's no real taxi rank at the beach. Addison Gilbert Hospital in Gloucester (part of Beth Israel Lahey Health) is the nearest hospital, a few minutes from the beach, with an emergency department; for major trauma the larger Beverly Hospital is ~20–25 minutes away and Boston hospitals ~1 hour. Cold water is the headline hazard: low-40s°F in winter and rarely above the mid-60s in summer, so a proper wetsuit (4/3 to 5/4 plus boots, gloves and hood in the cold months) is non-negotiable and hypothermia is a real risk on long winter sessions. It's a sand-bottom beach break, so no reef or urchins, but the shifting sandbars create rip currents — use the channels to paddle out and respect them, especially after the bank rearranges in a swell. The tidal creek at the south end runs a current and the rocks around Salt Island are a hazard on bigger days. Water quality is generally good and the beach is tested weekly in summer, but the Good Harbor creek/lagoon periodically closes for high enterococci bacteria (usually after heavy rain) — avoid the creek when posted and don't surf right after big rainfall. Lifeguards staff the beach in summer only; outside the season you're on your own.
