Doheny needs south or southwest swell to wrap into the cove, so it is a summer wave: the season runs roughly May through September, peaking June to September when Southern Hemisphere swells arrive on warm, glassy mornings. April and October are shoulder months with some swell and thinner crowds. From November through March the headland blocks the winter northwest swells and the beach is often close to flat, which is fine for a complete first lesson in whitewater but not for a surf trip. Mornings are cleanest; the afternoon sea breeze and the summer crowd arrive together.

The lineup is the other half of the appeal. Doheny is crowded on any decent summer day, but it is crowded with people who expect you to be there. Surf schools run lessons from the sand, families push kids into whitewater, longboarders share the outside peaks, and nobody is surprised to see a first-timer paddling out. If you have been put off by the pecking order at other SoCal breaks, this is the place to log hours without stress. The flip side is that on a real south swell the peaks near the jetty get more interesting, long rights and lefts over shallow rock, and a core crew of loggers knows exactly where to sit.

Logistics are about as easy as a surf trip gets. John Wayne Airport is half an hour up the freeway, you park in the state park lot a short walk from the sand, there is a cafe and rentals on the beach, and you can sleep in the campground a few hundred yards from the wave. Dana Point Harbor is next door for whale watching and the Lantern District is a few minutes up the hill for dinner. Come May through September when the south swells run, bring a longboard, and treat it as a warm-up, a family trip, or a soft first week in the water.

Who it suits

Beginners, longboarders, and surfers bringing kids or a partner into the water for the first time. Intermediates will enjoy it on a real south swell with a log or a mid-length, but anyone chasing punch or hollow sections should base here and drive to Salt Creek or San Onofre.

What are the lineup and the town like at Doheny State Beach?

Localism

mellow

Crowd

Crowded, and relaxed about it. On any summer morning expect dozens of people spread across the north-end peaks: lesson groups in the whitewater, families, soft-tops, mid-lengths, and a core of longboarders on the outside. The crowd thins on weekday dawn patrols and in the shoulder months, and the beach is big enough that you can always find a less-busy stretch of whitewater. Winter is quiet because there is usually not much wave.

Doheny is known as one of the friendliest lineups in Southern California. It is a state beach with surf schools working the sand, and the regulars, many of them longboarders who have surfed here for decades, expect beginners to be in the water and are generally generous with waves and advice. Basic rules still apply: do not drop in, do not paddle through the inside where people are riding, hold onto your board in the whitewater rather than letting it fly, and give the loggers on the outside peak the right of way on a set wave. Say hi; this is a lineup that talks.

In the lineup: The surf beach is the north end of the park, between the harbor jetty and the San Juan Creek mouth. The peaks nearest the jetty (you will hear names like The Point and Boneyard) break over shallow cobble and rock and offer the longest rides on a south swell at mid to high tide; rocks show at low tide, so beginners should sit further down the beach where the bottom is sand and the wave is pure whitewater. The lagoon at the creek mouth is a no-go after rain. Paddle out through the gaps between lesson groups rather than straight through them.

Dana Point is polished, family-friendly south Orange County: manicured bluffs, a walkable Lantern District of restaurants and breweries up the hill, and a harbor next door that is mid-way through a multi-year, $600M+ rebuild (most of the wharf restaurants have closed as of late 2026, while whale watching, the Catalina ferry, and the boardwalk stay open). Doheny itself feels different from the resort coast north of it: a big public lawn, fire rings, campers, kids on bikes, and the smell of charcoal in the evening. It is the surf-town heart of a resort town, with Hobie's and Killer Dana's history in the shop names.

How do you get to Doheny State Beach?

Fly into John Wayne Airport (Orange County) (SNA) — about 25 miles from the break, 30–40 minutes (longer in rush hour or summer beach traffic). SAN (San Diego, ~55 mi south) and LAX (~60 mi north) both work and sometimes have cheaper or more international fares, but each adds an hour or more of SoCal freeway driving versus SNA. SNA is the easy default.

  • rental car$45–90/day · 30–40 minutes to Dana Point via I-5 / PCH

The practical choice. All the major agencies operate at SNA. Most rentals are sedans and SUVs without racks, so bring soft racks or fit a board inside; a longboard fits in most mid-size SUVs with the seats down. The state park lot is $15 a day Monday to Friday and $20 on weekends and in summer, or metered at $7 an hour (two-hour minimum).

  • rideshare$45–75 (surge can push higher) · 30–40 minutes

Uber and Lyft pick up from the marked SNA zones and drop you at the park entrance at 25300 Dana Point Harbor Drive. Standard cars take a shortboard with the seats down; request XL for a board bag or longboard. If you are camping or staying within walking distance, rideshare for the airport legs and skip the car.

  • bus$2–8 per person (with transfer) · 90 minutes–2 hours

OCTA Route 1 runs the full length of PCH from Long Beach to San Clemente and stops at PCH and Dana Point Harbor Drive, a short walk from the park gate; getting from SNA to PCH takes a transfer or two. Fine with a daypack and one board, slow with a coffin bag.

  • private transfer$90–150 per car · 30–40 minutes

Pre-booked car services and shuttles run SNA to Dana Point and will take board bags if you flag it when booking. Worth it for a group splitting the fare or a late arrival; a rental car is better value for more than a night or two.

Do you need a car at Doheny State Beach?

Do you need a car?

optional

Walkability

If you camp in the park or stay at the Hilton Garden Inn across PCH, you can walk to the wave, the cafe, the harbor, and the Del Obispo shops without touching a car. The Lantern District (restaurants, Killer Dana) is a mile up the hill and walkable if you do not mind the climb back. Salt Creek, San Onofre, and the supermarkets are a drive.

Doheny is one of the few SoCal spots where a car is optional rather than required, as long as you base inside the park or within a few blocks of it. Beach parking is the main daily cost: the state park lot is $15 per vehicle Monday to Friday, $20 on weekends and through the summer, or $7 an hour metered with a two-hour minimum, and it fills by mid-morning on summer weekends. A California State Parks annual pass pays off if you are here a week. Uber and Lyft are reliable for dinner runs and the airport; rental cars run $45–90 a day from SNA if you want to range to Salt Creek, San Onofre, or Laguna.

Boards: It is a flat, easy walk from the lot across the lawn to the sand with no stairs or bluff. Rentals and lessons operate on the beach, and Killer Dana will deliver a rental board to a local hotel, so plenty of visitors never bring a board at all. Bikes and the paved beach trail link the park to the harbor and Capistrano Beach if you want to pedal with a board under your arm.

What should you know before you go?

Cash & ATMs

No ATM in the park. The park kiosk and the Doho Cafe take cards. ATMs and banks are a few minutes away at the Del Obispo shopping centers and in the Lantern District. Carry a card and a little cash for the campground fire-wood sellers and taco counters.

Medical

Providence Mission Hospital in Mission Viejo (full ER, about 15 minutes inland) is the nearest major hospital; Mission Hospital Laguna Beach is about 20 minutes north. Urgent-care clinics dot Dana Point and San Juan Capistrano. California State Parks lifeguards patrol Doheny year-round and respond to in-water emergencies.

Water safety

State Parks lifeguards patrol year-round, with towers staffed roughly Memorial Day through Labor Day. The wave is gentle but the hazards are real for beginners: shallow cobble and rock at the north peaks on a low tide, rip currents along the harbor jetty on bigger south swells, and loose boards in a crowded whitewater. Water quality is Doheny's known weak point: San Juan Creek drains into the south end of the beach and bacteria levels spike after rain, so follow the 72-hour no-surf rule after a storm and check the posted advisories at the entrance (ocbeachinfo.com publishes the county's current closures). Water runs about 59–60°F in winter and 67–69°F in late summer.

Unlimited — domestic travel — No passport needed for travel within the 50 states (including Hawaii) or to Puerto Rico. Since May 7, 2025 you need a REAL ID-compliant driver's license (star marking) or a passport to clear TSA for domestic flights — check your license before booking.

Language

English, Spanish (widely spoken, esp. California, Texas, Florida). Native — English works everywhere, including every surf town.

A, B · 120V / 60Hz

Tipping

Expected and culturally significant: 18–22% at sit-down restaurants, $1–2 per drink at bars, 10–15% for taxis/rideshares. Counter-service tip screens are common but optional.

Phone / data

Your existing US plan, T-Mobile / AT&T prepaid, Travel eSIMs (Airalo, Holafly, Nomad). Strong LTE/5G in cities and most coastal towns. Frequently asked questions about Doheny State Beach

Is Doheny State Beach good for beginners?

Yes, it is one of the classic learn-to-surf beaches in California. The headland and harbor jetty filter the swell into a slow, soft, rolling wave over sand and cobble, surf schools teach right on the sand, and the crowd is used to beginners. It is a poor choice for anyone wanting powerful or hollow waves.

When is the best time of year to surf Doheny?

May through September, peaking June to September, when south and southwest swells wrap into the cove. Winter northwest swells are blocked by the headland and the beach is often nearly flat from November to March. Mornings are cleanest before the sea breeze.

How crowded is Doheny?

Busy on summer days, with lesson groups, families and longboarders spread across the north-end peaks, but it is known as a welcoming lineup rather than a competitive one. Weekday dawn patrols and the April and October shoulder months are noticeably quieter.

Can I camp at Doheny State Beach?

Yes. The campground has about 118 tent and RV sites (no hookups, hot showers), including premium ocean-front sites, a short walk from the surf. Book through ReserveCalifornia; in 2026 the booking window is three months ahead of arrival, and a modernization closure is expected sometime between 2027 and 2029.

How much is parking at Doheny State Beach?

The state park lot is $15 per vehicle Monday to Friday, $20 on weekends and during summer, or $7 per hour metered with a two-hour minimum; oversized vehicles pay $30. The park is open 6am to 10pm and the lot fills by mid-morning on summer weekends.

What about Salt Creek and San Onofre nearby?

Salt Creek is 3 miles north: a punchier, multi-peak cove with waves for every level, including advanced lefts at The Point. San Onofre is about 15 miles south: Old Man's is the other great California longboard wave, a step up from Doheny in size and consistency. Both are PopUpSurf spots and easy day trips from a Doheny base.

Which airport is closest to Doheny State Beach?

John Wayne Airport (SNA) in Orange County, about 25 miles and 30–40 minutes by car. San Diego (SAN) and LAX are alternatives if fares are cheaper, but each adds an hour or more of freeway driving.

Do I need a wetsuit at Doheny?

Most of the year, yes. Water runs about 59–60°F from December through April (a 4/3 or a thick 3/2), 62–64°F in May and June (3/2), and 67–69°F from July through October, when a spring suit or a 2mm top is enough for most people. Lessons include a wetsuit.
