This is also the Big Island's most competitive lineup. The takeoff zone is small, the local pack is tight and talented, and contests and pro-level surfers cycle through whenever it's chest-high or better. Visitors get waves here by being patient, sitting slightly off the main peak, and showing obvious respect — not by paddling straight to the boil. When it's small it's a forgiving longboard wave; when it's overhead the shallow reef and the crowd make it an experts' arena.
The trade-off for the crowd is pure convenience. Banyans sits two and a half miles south of downtown Kailua-Kona, so everything — condos, poke shops, breweries, grocery runs, manta night dives, coffee farms — is within a ten-minute drive. Dawn patrol is glassy and busiest with the core crew; mid-morning weekdays and small summer days are your friendliest windows. Contests take over the peak a few weekends a year.
Banyans is known as the Big Island's most competitive lineup: a small takeoff zone, a tight and very capable local pack, and priority that is earned, not assumed. The crew is known for being protective of the peak — visitors who sit a little wide, wait their turn, never paddle around anyone, and pick off the waves that swing through unclaimed do fine and often get waved into a few. Showing up with a crew, snaking, or burning someone on a set wave is how trouble starts. On small longboard days it's far mellower.
In the lineup: The A-frame peaks over a shallow lava shelf in front of the Kona Bali Kai. Paddle out through the deeper channel on the right (south) side of the peak and wait your turn on the shoulder rather than at the boil. Best mid-to-high tide; at low tide the inside gets dangerously shallow. Booties optional but wana (sea urchins) carpet the flats — don't put a foot down. No lifeguard here; nearest towers are Kahalu'u and Magic Sands.
Kailua-Kona is a working tourist town, not a surf village: a sunny oceanfront strip of condos, beach bars, fish restaurants and souvenir shops along Alii Drive, with the practical sprawl of big-box stores up the hill. It's the hub for fishing charters, the Ironman World Championship and coffee country, so the crowd is a mix of locals, snowbirds and triathletes. Evenings mean sunset mai tais and early nights — nightlife is a few bars downtown, not a scene. The Banyans stretch itself is residential condo coast: quiet, convenient, and two minutes from your wave.
How do you get to Banyans?
Fly into Ellison Onizuka Kona International Airport at Keāhole (KOA) — about 11 miles from the break, 20–25 minutes. Hilo (ITO) is the Big Island's other airport but sits a 2.5-hour drive across the island — only useful if you're splitting the trip with the east side. Inter-island connections via Honolulu (HNL) are frequent on Hawaiian and Southwest.

If you stay on the Banyans stretch of Alii Drive (Kona Bali Kai, Alii Villas, My Hawaii Hostel are all within a few hundred yards of the peak) you can walk to the wave, a poke shop and a couple of bars. Downtown Kailua-Kona's restaurant row is 2.5 miles north — a long, hot walk but an easy bike or five-minute drive.
Rent a car ($50–90/day from KOA) — it's how you'll chase Kahalu'u, Lyman's, Magic Sands and Pine Trees when Banyans is maxed or mobbed, and how you'll reach Costco, coffee farms and the volcano. Carless is doable on the Banyans strip itself: Uber/Lyft work reliably in town, the county Hele-On bus runs a cheap but infrequent Kona route, and several outfits rent bikes and scooters along Alii Drive. Parking at Banyans is a small free roadside lot that fills early on good swells.
Boards: Bring soft racks — most Kona rentals come without rails. Boards under 7'0" fit inside a standard SUV with the seats down. Rideshares are hit-or-miss with board bags; for airport runs with a longboard, book a taxi van or shuttle and declare the bag.

No ATM at the break itself, but Kailua-Kona is a normal US town: Bank of Hawaii, First Hawaiian and ATMs at KTA and the shopping centers up Palani Road, 5 minutes away. Cards accepted essentially everywhere; keep small cash for the farmers market and food trucks.

Urgent-care clinics in Kailua-Kona town (5–10 minutes) handle reef cuts and urchin spines; Kona Community Hospital, the regional hospital with a 24-hour ER, is in Kealakekua about 12 miles / 25 minutes south. Pharmacies (Longs/CVS, Target, KTA) are all in town.
Water safety
The hazard list at Banyans is the reef, not the ocean roulette: a shallow, urchin-covered lava shelf that gets very skinny at low tide — surf it mid-to-high and never dab a foot down (wana spines are the classic Kona souvenir; vinegar and tweezers at urgent care if you collect some). Rips are mild as the wave drains into the south channel, but winter west swells hit with real power and board-breaking sections. No lifeguards at Banyans — nearest are Kahalu'u and Magic Sands. Water quality is generally good on this lava coast, with occasional brown-water advisories after heavy rain; sharks are present but incidents on this stretch are rare.
